On the 22th June, PRIMUS member Prof. Dr. Vanda Brotas from MARE-FC.ID has participated on a roundtable science discussion in the scope of “Espaço à Quarta”, an outreach activity organized by Ciência Viva and Esero Portugal, in collaboration with the Portuguese Space Agency. This week, the theme was “From Space to the Ocean” as a prelude for the UN Ocean Conference which is taking place in Lisbon, Portugal, over this week.
“Espaço à Quarta” aims at highlighting the importance of Space in a range of applications within our daily lives, from telecommunications, weather forecasts, precision agriculture, the management of precious resourcesand, of course, the observation and monitoring of the ocean and coastline. In addition to bringing her extensive experience linking her expertise in ecology dynamics of marine phytoplankton to the remote sensing of ocean colour and primary production of estuarine ecosystems, Vanda referred to PRIMUS as an example of such synergy between the two observational approaches.
This roundtable discussion, which also included Luís Sousa (LS Engenharia Geográfica), Pedro Lourenço (EMSA), and João Fernandes (RTA and ATA), was moderated by Carolina Sá, responsible for the Earth Observation projects of the Portuguese Space Agency – Portugal Space, and former researcher at MARE-UL.
