Biogeoscientist and PRIMUS member Dr. Catarina V. Guerreiro (MARE/FC-ID) was invited to speak at the Conference “A Sea of Opportunities” recently held on the World Oceans Day, 8th June 2023, by the City Hall of Torres Vedras (Portugal) at the Environmental Interpretation Centre of the Local Natural Reserve Foz Azul.
The conference was aimed at creating awareness in the general public to the many ecosystem services that seaweeds offer and their contribution to the well-being of our planet. Dr. Guerreiro presented a talk on “The importance of marine phytoplankton for atmospheric CO2 sequestration”, during which she has introduced several of the projects currently ongoing at MARE, including PRIMUS. Dr. Susana Mendes and Dr. Filipa Gomes from the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (Higher School of Tourism and Sea Technology/MARE) were also invited to talk about the importance of food products based on marine resources for a human healthy diet. The conference ended with a algae-based cooking show organized by Patricia Borges owner of the Catering & Events enterprise “Sea Lovers”.
