PRIMUS Outreach: Bror Jönsson gives a seminar on AI machine learning methods to study the ocean, at the University of Concepción (Chile)

Dr. Bror Jönsson, formerly PML-affiliated PRIMUS member and currently Senior Researcher the University of New Hampshire (USA), has presented his work on artificial intelligence (AI) applied to investigate primary production and carbon transfer in the ocean. The invitation to present this seminar at the University of Concepción came from Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa Quijada, Director of the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO) and Dr. Ronald Mennickent Cid, Director of Research and Artistic Creation.

Dr. Bror Jönsson presenting his PRIMUS research at the University of Concepción using machine learning tools to combine ocean models, satellite data and field observations to study the ocean.

During his lecture, Bror Jönsson emphasized the great potential of new AI tools to open paths towards understanding global natural phenomena, by combining ocean models, satellite data and field observations, and through maximizing the use of ocean data – even those of lower quality – and still finding significant results. He further emphasized how crucial this is towards understand the connections between different physical and biological processes, and for improving the ability of science at predicting phenomena. As an example of such tools, Bror Jönsson shared his PRIMUS research using machine learning algorithms to study links between drivers of marine primary production and carbon transfer in the ocean, based on a intrinsically interdisciplinary approach.
